UNDERSTANDING THE CHAKRAS | The Energy Center of the Body
Share
Chakras are the subtle but powerful energy centers inside the human body. They are likened to organic ‘vortexes’ that store, process and influence energy where each one has its own sphere of influence on human physiology and spiritual development.
The word “Chakra” is Sanskrit for wheel or circle, and they are theorized to be wheel-like in form. There are seven (7) Chakras that are aligned vertically along the center of the body and they each work with vital organs, colors and the elements. The Chakras are simply energy processing centers for the body that processes our emotional matter such as security, love, etc., and ensures the wellness of a person. However, these chakras can be prone to deficiencies and imbalances. Meditation and Reiki are able to help with this.
THE 7 ENERGY CENTERS
Below you’ll find a list of the seven Chakras, the color that associates with them along with the element and vital organs they affect:
ROOT CHAKRA
The Root Chakra is considered the “Base” Chakra because it is located at the base of the spine, at the perineum. It is our closest connection to our animal nature.
The color that represents the Root Chakra is Red and the element is Earth. It is concerned with safety, stability and security.
The organs that surround it are the kidneys, adrenal glands, leg bones, large intestines, rectum and the spinal column. It is the Chakra that keeps a person grounded to their physical existence.
When the Root Chakra is in balance, we feel safe and secure, literally ‘at home’. When it is out of balance, we either feel uncomfortably ‘trapped’, or ‘out of place’ and unable to ‘set down roots’.
Joint pain, lower backache, elimination problems, obesity, constipation, anorexia and poor immune system function are all the health issues that are associated with this Chakra.
SACRAL CHAKRA
The second Chakra is located slightly below the navel and is concerned with creativity and procreation. Mainly Sex. This Chakra is of particular importance to women, as its energies are normally considered feminine. The whole reproductive system belongs to it, including the bladder and the spleen.
Aligned with the Water element and the color Orange, this Chakras energy continuously ‘flows’ like creativity itself, into the other Chakras. When imbalanced, it manifests as distrust and isolation (too little energy), or as lust (too much energy).
The health issues that are connected to the Sacral Chakra are uterine or bladder problems, sexual difficulties, impotence, lack of flexibility, sciatica, lower back pain and problems with the large intestines.
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
This Chakra is known as the ‘seat of power’. The third Chakra is literally the human ‘fire in the belly’ of personal power, energy and ambition. It is responsible for survival and success in the material world and is associated with the color Yellow and the Fire element.
When in balance, this Chakra grants confidence, willpower and the ability to act with integrity. Unbalanced results in a hunger for power that may border on megalomania (too much energy), and in feelings of low self-confidence, helplessness and self persecution (too little energy).
Diabetes, hypoglycemia, gallstones, nervousness, low energy, muscle cramps, stomach problems, lumbar spine and liver disorders are associated illnesses to this Chakra.
HEART CHAKRA
As its name implies, this Chakra is located right in the heart. It controls many of the functions associated with the heart, including the arms, lower lungs, skin and the thymus gland. This is the Chakra of the entire circulatory system.
The Heart Chakra is the one that creates the link from the physical world towards spiritual existence. It is also the center of one’s emotions, especially the emotion of love, both of others and love for oneself. Its color is Green and the element is Air.
A balanced Heart Chakra generates mature feelings of love, whereas an unbalanced Heart Chakra is tainted by grief or narcissism. The physical imbalance is associated with high blood pressure, breathing difficulties, circulation problems, shortness of breath, chest pains, disorders of the heart and tension between the shoulders.
THROAT CHAKRA
The fifth Chakra is linked to the color Blue, the Ether element, the Thyroid gland, and is the communicator of the body and the spirit. It concerns not only how we communicate with others, but with ourselves.
The Throat Chakra also controls the throat, jaw, upper lungs and vocal chords. It may also affect the digestive system and it inspires creativity. When there’s too much energy, it leaves pride unchecked and bolsters false communication; and too little energy results in weakened communication and negative self-talk.
Health issues include fever, ear infections, weariness, thyroid problems, disorders in the throat, ears, voice, neck, cervical spine, hypothalamus and esophagus problems.
THIRD-EYE CHAKRA
Due to its placement between the brows, the sixth Chakra is called the Third-Eye Chakra and it corresponds to the brain, nose, face, eyes and almost all of the organs situated in the head. It also has the power over the lower brain, pituitary gland and the central nervous system. The color is Indigo and there is no element associated with this Chakra.
This is the Chakra that opens one’s intuition. It allows a person to visualize, manifest and even create visions beyond ordinary sight and has the ability to help the body heal. When out of balance, the mind and body act ‘out of sync’ with each other and the intuition is reduced.
Headaches, eye problems, pituitary and pineal glands and neurological problems are all the health issues stem from an unbalanced Third-Eye Chakra.
CROWN CHAKRA
This Chakra is located at the Crown (the highest point) of the head. Its placement at the top of the cranium correlates with the fontanel, or 'soft spot’ found in the craniums of babies. Like the 6th Chakra, it regulates the functions of the brain, but is continually focused on the spiritual realm rather than the physical.
Guidance comes directly to us from the divine and is received through this Chakra. The life force from the Creator penetrates into our energy system through the Crown, and moves down through the other energy centers to the Root Chakra. From here we are inspired by God, and filled with Grace, because we have a strong connection to a power greater than ourselves. We live in the present time and our spirits live in the now in harmony with our form and will.
Blocks in this Chakra cause confusion, depression, fear of success and lack of inspiration. The flow of spiritual energy is blocked in both directions. When this happens, spiritual addiction and over-intellectualizing occurs, as well as disassociation with the body.
Health issues include migraines, brain tumors, coma, amnesia, nervous system and muscular system disorders, mental issues and skin disorders.
